FFA members find success at state convention

By Staff | Jul 14, 2017

Every first full week of June, FFA members from across North Dakota gather at the North Dakota State University campus in Fargo to showcase their hard work and talents. This year the Rugby FFA Chapter brought a total of 41 student members to compete in career development events ranging from agricultural mechanics and meats judging, to food science and dairy cattle judging. The week was highlighted by many individual successes of the members. Cory Schmaltz competed against other 9th grade students from all over the state and earned the high individual spot in the Basic Agricultural Mechanics event. Breanna Thompson competed in the Meat Judging event and earned the high individual spot. Abagail Volk and Tristin Lunde were named State Champion in their proficiency award areas. Abagail Volk, Brett Berginski, Jacob Blessum, Cade Heilman, Katelyn Kuntz, Jazlyn Brossart, Matty Koenig, Morgan Oppen, Peyton Livedalen, Devin Vetsch, and Kade Leier were recipients of the North Dakota State Degree. MyKell Bosch, Reid Mundahl, and Kurt Pfau were recommended by the ND State FFA for the National American Farmer Degree. Lastly, Volk was elected to serve as the 2017-18 North Dakota State FFA Sentinel, which makes her the 41st Rugby FFA member to serve as a State Officer, and third member of her family to become a State Officer (Marcie 1986 and Katie 1992).

The Rugby FFA also had many other Gold award winners (top 10 percent of their event). Those were: Kaden Jaeger and Shawn Schaan in Agricultural Mechanics, Berginski in Farm Business Management, Christine Vetsch in Floriculture, Alissa Volk and Berginski in Food Science, Kimberlee Leier in Horse Judging, Abagail Volk in Quiz Bowl, and Koenig, Oppen, Thompson, and Halie Schmaltz in Small Animal Care (2nd High Team).

Along with individual successes, the Rugby FFA Chapter was chosen to move on to national judging for the National Superior Chapter Award.

Overall, the Rugby FFA had a very successful week highlighted with many student accomplishments.
