Oppen to teach kickboxing in Rugby
About 10 years ago, Cari Oppen walked into ATA seeking a different fitness option.
Oppen met the owners of the Minot ATA and tried a kickboxing class. She stayed in the program for seven years.
“The people I kickboxed with were amazing, we became a family,” Oppen said.
After four years straight of kickboxing, Oppen joined the ATA’s taekwondo program in Rugby and three years later attained first degree black belt status.
Starting June 5, Oppen will be teaching kickboxing classes in the back of the old Only Deals location, 140 South Main Avenue in Rugby.
“The opportunity became available and I just knew it was time to offer my heart, my passion of martial arts fitness to my home community.” Oppen said.
In the classes, Oppen will teach boxing and kicking moves similar to kicks and punches used in taekwondo, as well as grounding principals that, as Oppen said, “brought children and adults together in one space with a goal of a Black Belt in sight.”
Oppen plans to focus primarily on adult fitness, but in the future may have an option for kids and teens to try kickboxing.
The process of getting the space ready for kickboxing classes began a few months ago, after Oppen had been approached a second time to teach kickboxing. Stephanie Steinke and Brooks Houim helped get the space ready and Oppen purchased mats and boxing bags.
“Making your dream happen requires work and dedication,” Oppen said. “Seeing it come together makes my heart full!”
Oppen said her family has been “super supportive” as the classes have come into fruition.
Classes will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with 8-student sessions at 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The cost is $12 for one class, $55 for five classes or $110 for 10 classes.
An information and signup session was held Wednesday. Interested persons can also sign up for the classes via the internet at carioppencoaching.acuityscheduling.com or by contacting Oppen directly at 701-208-0342.
