Village Arts celebrates 50th anniversary
This is no ordinary year for Village Arts.
The arts organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary during 2017. Founder Glory Monson is still Village Arts’ Artistic Director. “When we started in 1967 I never suspected we would still be working with the arts 50 years later,” Monson said.
The annual spring pops concert will be the first event celebrating the organization’s golden anniversary. Rehearsals for the concert begin on Monday, March 6th at 7:00 pm for strings players and at 8 pm for band instrumentalists playing in the symphony orchestra. The Heartland Civic Choir will begin rehearsals on Monday, March 20th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. All rehearsals are held at the Rugby Senior High School band and choir rooms. The concert will be held on Sunday, April 30th at 2:00 pm.
Music program director Deb Jenkins said that all adults and high school students who play an instrument or sing are invited to participate. “We don’t have auditions. We just open the door and are glad to have folks who want to make music join in!” Students who play a stringed instrument such as violin, viola, cello or string bass are invited to participate in a youth orchestra as well.
Jenkins added,” This is a very big year for Village Arts, so I hope our community will choose to celebrate with us by being a part of the orchestra, choir, children’s theatre or summer musical this year. There only a handful of arts organizations in the state of North Dakota who have operated continuously for 50 years. Our record says a lot for our community.” Monson agreed. “People wonder if there is something in Rugby’s water that is responsible for the talented actors and musicians we are known for across the state. And our appreciative, supportive audiences have made every one of our 50 years feel like a great success!”
This year’s orchestra and choir directors are Tilman Hovland, Deb Jenkins and Andee Mattson. They can be contacted for further information.
