Block named December volunteer of the month
In an ironic twist of fate, Shelley Block has been named December’s Volunteer of the Month.
As it was Block’s idea to start ‘Volunteer of the Month,’ she laughed when she learned of her nomination. “To be nominated, it’s really nice,” she said. “It’s quite touching. [I’m] just thankful for it.”
Block has volunteered wherever she could around the community, helping a lot with Rugby Chamber of Commerce events when she held the position of executive director. In addition to Chamber events, Block volunteers at the Lyric Theater once or twice a month, is a director of the Rugby Lions Club, helps with Christian Mothers at her church, and volunteers with Relay for Life.
Block said she learned the importance of volunteering from her mother. “[My mother] was always helping here, helping there, doing whatever she could. She led a good example,” she said.
Block has recently switched careers, now holding the title of Volunteer Services coordinator at Heart of America Medical Center. In this new position, it will be Block’s job to coordinate volunteering activities at the hospital, something that she is looking forward to doing.
“As much as I love to volunteer, and here I am, as the Volunteer Services coordinator,” Block said. “I just know how important [volunteering] is.”
To Block, no one of her volunteering posts is better than another. She looks forward to helping at the theater. She enjoys being on the board for the Lions Club. She appreciated every event she was able to help with during her time at the Chamber.
“I enjoy every single aspect of every one of them. You think you know what an organization is about, but then you get involved, and you really find out,” Block said about her experiences volunteering.
Block volunteers simply because she likes to. “I would probably volunteer more if I had more time to do it,” she said. “I believe in volunteering, and I believe in helping others.”
