‘I’ll be home for Christmas’
Village Arts will jump start Rugby’s Christmas holiday season with their concert, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” on Sunday, December 4th. Program director Deb Jenkins hopes for a great turn out by audience members for what has now become a local holiday tradition. “So many people have told us that they don’t feel the ‘Christmas mood’ until they’ve attended the concert,” she said.
The Heartland Civic Orchestras and Choir as well as the HeartStrings youth orchestra will perform popular and traditional Christmas music. The groups began giving regular concerts in 1999. Since then, hundreds of youth and adults have performed in these groups. Jenkins estimates that more than 65 area musicians will perform in the concert. Some of this season’s members travel more than 50 miles to play or sing in the groups.
Jenkins said that this year’s concert theme is all about home. “We’ll perform a number of popular Christmas tunes that have ‘home’ in the title or represent the movement of the three kings, for example, toward the home of the infant Messiah.” This Christmas concert will also feature an original composition by North Dakota state composer, David Halvorson. This original piece of music will feature the string orchestra and choir. It is performed for the first time on any stage in Rugby.
The concert will be held on Sunday, December 4th at 2:00 PM in the Tilman Hovland Auditorium at Rugby High School. Tickets are available at the door. A holiday reception with seasonal treats for audience members will be held during intermission.
