Esmond bar under new ownership

By Staff | Nov 10, 2016

There are some big changes taking place at the Esmond Bar.

The bar recently came under new ownership and the new owners have already made several improvements to the building — and more are yet to come.

“We put in a new floor, painted everything, put mirrors behind the bar and we’ve got all new tables and chairs,” said Jola Streifel, who recently purchased the bar with business partner Dawn Zimney.

Streifel is a former resident, graduating from Esmond High School.

“I left for college and never came back,” she said.

Streifel attended Jamestown College and finished her degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Both she and Zimney currently reside in Grand Forks, where Streifel owns and operates a screen printing business called Daydream Specialties.

Her brother, Cy Streifel, will manage the bar. He had been an employee at the bar under previous owner Jeanne Overcash.

Streifel said all of the other employees are staying there as well.

A grand opening celebration will be held the weekend of Nov. 4-6.

“We will have food Friday, but the big grand opening will be Saturday,” Streifel said.

A meat raffle is planned Saturday from 7 p.m. to midnight, along with door prizes and food. On Sunday, she said soup or some other food will be served for the hunters in the area.

The bar will keep the current hours of 12 noon to 1 a.m. each day and Streifel said they have not had to close the bar at all during the transition.

She said in the future she will come back to Esmond at least once a month to ensure everything is running smoothly.

“Before, I’d come back once every two or three months,” she noted.

Streifel said she is excited for the new venture and is happy that it will be beneficial to the town.

“I know businesses are important in a small community,” she said. “The previous owner wanted to sell and I saw the opportunity to buy the bar and keep Esmond going.”
