4-H meats team second in nation
The Pierce County 4-H meat judging team representing North Dakota placed second in the National 4-H meat judging contest held October 18 in Manhattan, Kan. Team members were Breanna Thompson of Rugby, Devin Volk and Abby Volk of York, and Shane Giedd of Washburn.
In the individual overall competition, Devin Volk placed second, Giedd tied for third place, Thompson placed ninth, and Abby Volk was 11th.
The contest consists of judging classes of beef carcasses or primal cut, pork carcasses or primal cuts, retail cuts, oral reasons for the classes, and retail cut identification.
In the beef judging section, the team placed fourth.
In the pork judging section, the team placed first. Devin Volk placed first individually, and Giedd placed second.
In the retail cut judging, the team placed first. Thompson placed first individually and Abby Volk placed sixth.
The judging section of the contest total results showed Devin Volk in sixth, Abby Volk in eighth, Thompson in ninth and Giedd in 10th place.
The team placed second in reasons scores, with Giedd placing second high individual.
The team was coached by Gary Martens and Rick Vannett.
