Hovland named October Volunteer of the Month

By Staff | Oct 21, 2016

Tilman Hovland has been named October’s Volunteer of the Month.

Hovland has been a part of the community since 1962, when he was the Instrumental Music Director for grades 5-12 in the schools. He was also involved with the 7th and 8th grade choir, coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball, directed the Rugby Community Orchestra in 2000, is a member of the American Legion, and is the only remaining charter member of the Heart of America Concert Series.

To this day, Hovland still acts on the Concert Series Board and gives lessons in music to community members.

“He has over 40 years of volunteering for the Heart of America Concert Series, and in all that time, he has only missed one meeting,” Sue Steinke said.

Steinke nominated Hovland for this month’s volunteering recognition because of his hard work and dedication in the community. “He is one of the many unsung heroes in our community,” she said.

Hovland retired in 1993 from full-time teaching, but he continues to teach private students in both percussion and wind instruments.

“The third year I was here, I gave every student involved in band 30 minute private lessons,” Hovland said. “Many of them are now very accomplished in music.”

When asked why he volunteers, Hovland said, “It’s important from the standpoint, first of all, that there are so many opportunities to do so. Somebody has to do it. Somebody has to carry out the work.”

In all of his many contributions to the community, Hovland said that he really enjoyed coaching baseball. “If you were a live, breathing male, you were a part of [a baseball team] when I was growing up. I participated in sports in high school, and I had some pretty decent coaches. I wanted to be able to do that for kids, as well.”

Hovland has plans to continue volunteering as long as time allows. “Any community, I think, survives by the efforts of volunteers,” he said. “If you don’t have a community that volunteers, you don’t have a very successful community. You have to have that.”
