Pastor Barb Haugerud’s first Sunday as the new pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church was on September 11.

Haugerud grew up in Lakewood, Colorado and attended Seminary in Minnesota. Her first pastoral call was as associate pastor at Christ Lutheran in Minot. After 11 years there, she moved to Prairie Hope Ministry for the next eight years, which included six places of worship in the Maxbass, Newburg-Westhope and Souris areas. She then returned to Christ Lutheran for two more years as associate pastor.

Now, she pastors both the Rugby and Wolford Bethany Lutheran Parishes.

“[It has been] so far, so good,” Haugerud said. “I have been getting to know the community and the people a little bit better. It’s exciting.”

With a background of studying worship, Haugerud would like to bring various types of worship into Bethany Lutheran. One idea discussed was having spoken services in addition to the traditionally chanted ones. Haugerud would also like to bring a band to play during the service, even if only once a month.

“I have done a lot of study in worship,” she said. “Basically, just talking with people about what our faith means today. What it means to us, personally, and how we live it out in our daily life. [I would like to] have our worship reflect more of that have our worship in the language of the people.”

In her free time, Haugerud enjoys playing piano, both as a solo pianist and as an accompanist. “If there is anybody out there who needs an accompanist, for whatever reason, that’s a gift that I have that I am willing to share,” she said.

Attending sporting events is also something that Haugerud enjoys, and she plans to be in the crowd cheering during the upcoming basketball season in Rugby.

Haugerud moved to town with her husband, Cliff. “We have no children, but we do have a dog, who is our child,” she said. Their dog, Buddy, is a Border collie, black Lab mix.

Haugerud would like the community to know that all are welcome to attend Bethany Lutheran. “Anybody who believes that Jesus lived, died and rose for them is welcome at our table. If you’re looking for a church home, feel free to join us or at least come check us out,” she said.

Bethany Lutheran offers Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m. Communion is held on Second Sundays.
