City hires new auditor

By Staff | Sep 30, 2016

Last week’s city of Rugby budget hearing was the first for Rugby’s new city auditor.

Rugby native Jennifer Stewart started at the position last Monday, replacing former auditor Elizabeth Heisey-who moved to Texas, citing family reasons. Stewart formerly worked in the McHenry County Tax Director’s office as well as the Tax Equalization and County Recorder’s office in Ward County.

Stewart said the biggest challenge so far has been changing gears after working for more than eight years in another area, as well as learning everything the auditor position entails.

“This is a learning process, but I can read and I can learn,” Stewart said.

Stewart said that going forward making sure all deadlines are reached and the City Council is informed will be crucial.

Stewart said that as of late dealing with an entire city budget is a new process, having dealt with departmental budgets in the past. However, Stewart said she has been in contact with Heisey, understanding specifics about the proposed 2017 budget.

“I hope I can come in here and do a great job that impresses the city as a whole as well as the council that I’ll work with, and long-term just be in this office,” Stewart said.

Stewart has been living in Rugby since her return in 2006. Her and her husband Jeff, who teaches at Rugby High School, have two children.
