Prairie Rose

There is little that can compare to memories of home and family, especially those memories of a childhood home. Michelle Voeller has put those memories on paper for all to read. In her book, “Prairie Rose,” Voeller whose father is from Rugby remembers growing up visiting the town each summer, spending time with family and friends and learning along the way.
The book is a memoir about Voeller’s paternal grandparents and their life in Rugby. The story focuses on how the connection she shares not only with them, but also with Rugby itself, has shaped her. “It’s a sweet little story,” Voeller said. “It’s about having that strong, emotional connection to a small town, even though you might not live there anymore.”
Originally, “Prairie Rose” named for her grandmother, Rose Voeller was part of a summer writing project Voeller worked on as a high school English teacher. Written over 10 years ago, her mother encouraged her to revise the book for this year’s All-School Reunion.
“I think it’s a story that a lot of people can identify with. It can resonate with anyone from this area,” Voeller said about what makes the book great. Voeller described her memories of visiting family farms in Rugby, making friends and appreciating the foundation her grandparents laid for her here.
Voeller wrote this book as a way to honor and pay tribute to not only the town, but to the generations before her who lived here. “You get such grounded, humble beginnings in these small towns,” she said. “No matter where you go, you are still connected.”
Voeller will be selling copies of “Prairie Rose” next weekend at the All-School Reunion. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Heart of America Library.
