Nearly 1,000 hours completed

Offenders in the Heart of America Community Service Program have completed a large amount of hours as of last month.

On Tuesday morning, Community Service Coordinator Allan Meckle informed the Pierce County Commission that as of May, nearly 1,000 hours of community service have been completed in the area.

Meckle said that he has 49 open cases currently, 22 of them in the city of Rugby.

Meckle said that one change to his office is the ability to process credit card payments.

Meckle said an advisory board meeting for the program has been tentatively scheduled for July 14.

The community service program serves Pierce, McHenry and Bottineau counties


The board met with Sheriff Josh Siegler, who informed the board that he was waiting on vehicle bids; he was looking for a part-time dispatcher at the Law Enforcement Center; and there were 52 calls in May (2 medical, 3 fire, 14 assist other agencies, 17 arrests, 28 papers served and 6 warrants).

The board met with Heart of America Correctional & Treatment Center administrator Mike Graner, who informed the board that 121 inmates are housed in the facility; two new employees were hired; two corporals attended training; prisoner boarding renewal contracts were sent to Williams, Burleigh and Mountrail counties; and a boarding contract was sent out to Burke County.

The board met with Jessica Tagestad, of Wold Engineering, to discuss Hillside and Juniata Township road projects, as well as graveling.

The board met with Galen Cariveau, of Cariveau Workforce Services, to discuss changes made to the salary study for county employees, including corrections officer 1 and 2, social service director 1 and commissioners. Cariveau said he would have a complete set by the end of June.

The board accepted a bid from RDO Equipment for a new motorgrader.

The board approved an abatement request for Robert Rennock, Balta, in the amount of $50,371.

The board approved a games of chance site authorization at Larry’s Bar in Selz.

The board approved the May meeting minutes, bills, financial statements and treasurer’s checks.
