Delegates Respond to Life or Death Situation

By Staff | Apr 15, 2016

Fessenden EMT Tracy Pfeiffer (right) and HAMC nurse Almyra Buchmeier responded to a life or death situation at the state Republican convention in Fargo.

Some parts of political life are labeled “life or death” situations.

But at the N.D. State Republican Convention in Fargo earlier this month, an actual life or death situation occurred.

Just as Gov. Jack Dalrymple began his opening remarks, a delegate slumped in his chair, showing signs of a heart attack. Two District 14 delegates who were a few feet away-Almyra Buchmeier, a nurse at the Heart of America Medical Center, and Tracy Pfeiffer, an emergency medical technician from Fessenden-quickly sprang into action, administering CPR. They were joined by a third volunteer, and others brought an AED unit used to restart the patient’s pulse.

Paramedics arrived to transport the patient to the hospital.

Buchmeier was a first-time delegate, and Pfeiffer was a second-time delegate at the convention.
