Watching a child fall in love with books can be a rewarding and joyful sight. Rugby’s Imagination Library is celebrating serving pre-school children in the Rugby School district with books.

Imagination Library originated by Dolly Parton in 1996 to benefit the children of her home county. Since then it has grown to every state in the United States as well to Canada and the United Kingdom. Statistics and independent reports have shown Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

Imagination Library will send free books every month to every participating child in Pierce County from birth until their fifth birthday. However, each county participating must pay for the postage. Since June 2012, Imagination Library has sent out 5,834 books to preschool age children in Rugby.

“Being able to get a free book at your child’s development level is priceless, stated Jennifer Bartsch, kindergarten teacher at Ely Elementary. “As a teacher and a mom, I know firsthand that children who have books at home will have greater success at school. Research proves it! Our children have enjoyed the books they received and I believe that everyone with a child under five should take advantage of the program!”

Each participating child costs $25 per year to receive an age and developmentally-appropriate book once a month delivered right to their mailboxes. This creates a home library of up to 60 books.

March is Rugby’s Imagination Library promotional month. The local Imagination Library strives to reach all families who have children under the age of five and encourages them to register. Interested families can register online at www.imaginationlibrary.com or simply call Susan Schmaltz at 776-6023.

The Rugby Imagination Library committee consists of Denise Myhre, Kris Blessum, Alecia Pretzer, Jackie Skipper and Schmaltz. The month of March the committee seeks to raise funds to continue this program. The cost of sponsoring one child for an entire year is only $25. Individuals would like to be part of this program and donate can make a check payable to Imagination Library, Rugby High School, 1123 South Main Avenue, Rugby ND 58358.
