Speech Takes Third at Devils Lake
The Rugby Panther Speech Team travelled to Devils Lake High School last week for their first Class A competition of the season. The tournament, while considered “small” for a Class A meet, was an eye-opening experience for the young Panther team. With four Class A teams in attendance (Valley City, Jamestown, Devils Lake, and West Fargo), the Panther Speakers had their work cut out for them if they hoped to bring home the hardware.
Luckily, the Panthers rose to the challenge, breaking 18 of 42 entries into the final round. While the number seems small, only a fraction of the original entries, the final results indicate that the Panthers are able to do great things regardless.
The Panther Speech Team took home the third place team sweepstakes award on Saturday, earning 81 total team points. The Panthers came in behind Valley City (1st with 161 points), Devils Lake (Host with 117 points) and Jamestown (2nd with 97 points). The North Star team finished fourth (51 points). The tournament, in total, had 11 teams in attendance.
Highlighted results from the Devils Lake Tournament include three new state qualifiers. Thor Skjelver was able to earn 1st in Extemp Speaking, a result that will push him now to the state tournament where he earned 9th last year in the same event. This is Skjelver’s second qualification, adding to his Entertain Speech qualified at the Rugby Invitational. Rebekah Wangler added a second qualification as well, earning 2nd in Radio Broadcasting in an A/B split. This finish will advance her to the state tournament. Radio is the event Wangler placed in at the 2015 state tournament, the Panthers’ only final placing last year. Additionally, Maria Mack earned 1st place in Storytelling at Devils Lake for the second year in a row, advancing her to the state tournament.
The Panthers are next off to Bismarck for two competitions. They will compete at Bismarck Shiloh on February 12 and Mandan High School on February 13. Mandan will again be the site of the Class B State Tournament, so this upcoming weekend will be the Panthers’ first look at the judges for April.
Again, if you are ever looking for free banquet entertainment, the Panther Speech Team would be happy to supply you with a half-hour (or more) of performances. Public performances are a better practice than anything in a classroom.
