Quilting to Celebrate 100 Years
“Do I?hear $50, $100, $250..” will be the sound coming from the Rugby Eagles, Sat., Feb 20 for the Pierce County Fair Auction.
This year a group of quilting ladies wanted to do something extra special and extra large!
“The idea came up last year at the fair,” stated Barb Welk. “We wanted to something special for the 100th year of the fair.”
A pattern was chosen, along with a color theme red, white and blue, to honor the fair that takes place over the 4th of July. Kits were assembled to create a block for the quilt to be auctioned off at the Pierce County Fair Auction. Twenty three people bought the kits at $5 a kit to cover the cost of the material. After the blocks were sewn, the ladies returned them to Welk and Sharon Jordan, who then pieced together the top of the quilt-which consists of 42 squares. Theresa Kifer donated her time to quilt the 100″ x 110″ blanket together. When the piece is complete, a label sewn on the back stating all of the names who put work and effort in constructing the master piece.
After the auction the ladies will be focused on getting ready for next years Quilt Display at the fair. They have chosen for the 100th year to go with a theme to display, “Antique Quilts.”?Many will ask what constitutes an antique quilt – 1975 and older. However, if you think you have reason to be included ask the ladies, they’ll be happy to assist you.
The quilt is currently on display at North Star Credit Union in Rugby until the auction.
The quilt will be on live auction. The fundraiser is open to the public. For more information on the quilt or summer show call Barb Welk at 871-8826 or Theresa Kifer 881-1111. More information on the Pierce County Fair Auction call Don Jelsing at 208-2886.
