Crash on Highway 2
A Towner man was arrested last week after a two-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. Highway 2, three miles west of Rugby.
Fred Schell, 69, was reportedly driving a 2008 Chevrolet pickup west in an eastbound lane when he nearly collided with a 2012 Peterbilt Semi Tractor driven by William Griffin, 45, Rugby, which was heading east. Griffin took evasive action into the median, and Schell’s vehicle struck the semi in its rear passenger side trailer tires.
The semi was hauling a tanker style trailer containing approximately 9,500 gallons of mixed fuel.
Schell had minor injuries and was placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor. Griffin was not injured.
The passing lane on the eastbound side of the highway at the crash location was closed for approximately 3 hours.
The N.D. Highway Patrol, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, and Rugby Police and Fire Departments were agencies that responded to the crash.
