Pierce County Fair Wins Photo Award
The Pierce County Fair won first place in the Photography Contest at the North Dakota/ South Dakota Convention of Fairs and Celebrations, held in Aberdeen, S.D., a couple of weeks ago. The Pierce County Fair competed against all the county and state fairs in the two state region. To enter all entrants needed to submit four photos, measuring four inches by six inches on a white tag board. The pictures were to reflect the feel and emotion of fair, the fair’s atmosphere and the activities. Don Jelsing, the Pierce County Fair’s chairman, said of the award, “I am proud of the photos we submitted and receiving the recognition, considering we competed against all county and state fairs in North Dakota and South Dakota it was a great honor to win first place.” We are also proud of the Pierce County Fair that will be celebrating their 100th anniversary at this year’s fair.
The set of four winning photos submitted were taken by Don Jelsing. One was of Mike Ostrem kicking back after being up at 5 a.m. on a Saturday morning waiting for the Junior Points Livestock Show to start at 6 a.m., after he was up till 2 p.m. cleaning up after the big dance Friday night. Short hours and a County Fair are like oil and water, but it is a labor of love.
Photo two was an up-close and personal shot of “Betsy” the cow (Don named her after taking the picture) also known as the ‘Godfather’ of cows. Betsy was one of the animals that was part of the Junior Points Show. Did you know that a cow sweats through its nose?
Photo three is of the rodeo competition art the fair. It wouldn’t be a County Fair without a rodeo and it wouldn’t be a rodeo without calf roping. A calf roper has one simple philosophy: Do you want to play it safe and be good or do you want to take a chance and be great?
Photo four was taken atop of the 60-foot Atomic Drop, where as you ascended upward the view got better and better capturing the beauty and wonderment of the Pierce County Fair that was on display for all can see.
