The Northwest International Festival of Music was held at Minot State University last weekend. Seven students from Rugby High School were chosen from hundreds of auditions to participate in this festival. Karin Selland, Maria Mack, Allyson Kleespie, and Kaitlyn Boucher were chosen to be members of the honor band. Elizabeth Skjelver and Alissa Volk were chosen to be members of the Nova Choir, and Spencer Alefteras was chosen to be a member of the Mixed Choir.

All these talented students have one thing in common: they love music and it is more than something they can touch, it is something that reverberates in their souls. Skjelver shared, “I enjoy choir a lot because it gives me a place to be creative. Singing has been something that has been in my family all my life. It’s fun to know that I’m actually good at it and I am thrilled I was accepted in the Nova Choir. Volk said, “Singing is a way to be myself in a way that nothing else can. It allows me to be in touch with the my creative side and that is important to me.” Spencer who was chosen for the mix choir added, ” Choir is the only way I truly express myself. It is a great way to express your creativity and a place where I can be me.”

Selland expressed, “Band is an opportunity to be in a class that is different than just sitting at a desk. It’s more than art, it is a way we can express ourselves in a way that other people can enjoy.” Mack said, “Music has always been a part of my life. I love being part of a band and think it is great to be part of something that is so special.” Boucher commented, “Playing in the band is fun. Music is a big part of my everyday life; there is always music playing every chance I get.”

The students practiced with their groups Friday and Saturday, and the festival ended with a concert on Saturday afternoon. The concert included four groups, which were the Nova Choir, Women’s Choir, Mixed Choir, and Honor Band. The concert was streamed live and if you would like the web address to watch it please email kari.hill@k12.nd.us. Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Hill shared, “We are very proud of all of our students that performed at the festival. It is an honor to be chosen for such high caliber groups!”
