Bennett Brien Will Be In Rugby
The wildly entertaining and talented artist Bennett Brien will be the featured artist at this year’s Northern Lights Lions seventh annual Wine, Art, & Beer Fest to be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Rugby Country Club. Brien also created the famous and beloved, by most, University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux logo.
Brien graduated from the Belcourt High School in 1975. He then headed to Santa Fe, N.M., to attend the Santa Fe Art Institute for Native Americans, where he graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts. He continued his education at UND, receiving his Master’s degree in Fine Arts in 1988. He created the Fighting Sioux logo for the university in 1999.
Brien is also well known for his rebar (reinforcing bar/steel) sculptures. A beautiful rebar buffalo and rebar pony sit gracefully perched on the land surrounding the state capitol building in Bismarck; while a majestic sculpture of an eagle sits on the UND campus in Grand Forks.
Brien has also created works of art for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, University of Minnesota-Crookston, Grand Forks Police Station courtyard, N.D. scenic highway near St. John and Lake Metigoshe. In addition, a bronze bust of Pope John Paul II created by Brien is located in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Belcourt.
Along with the customary hors d’oeuvres, chili with the accompanying wine and beer the evening will also feature an evening with Brien discussing his art displays along with the items he will have for sale. There will also be a Dutch Auction, and raffle ticket sales that will be for one of Brien’s original pieces of art, Wine of the Month Club for 12 months and two UND/North Dakota Hockey Tickets. The funds raised will go to purchase gas cards for Pierce County cancer patients.
