Felony Arrest Made
The witching hour came early on Monday in Rugby. At approximately 9:15 p.m. Michael A. Champagne’s night concluded by being arrested for the theft of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
The motor vehicle was stolen on the 200 Block of North Main Avenue in Rugby. According to the police report, Champagne, the suspect, stole a vehicle parked in downtown Rugby. It is believed that the vehicle was open and the keys were left inside. While driving the stolen vehicle, Champagne crashed into a parked utility trailer, with side-by-side ATV(s) on it. After wrecking the vehicle, Champagne fled the scene of the crime and ran to a nearby residence. While at that residence, Champagne sought assistance of the occupant and asked for an ambulance to be called. While the ambulance was summoned, Champagne fled from that residence during the 911 call. Subsequently there was a second 911 call that reported there was someone trying to get inside parked vehicles – that someone was Champagne. A resident confronted Champagne, who laid down and remained subdued until police arrived. Subsequently a Rugby police officer took Champagne into custody without further incident. Both the stolen car and trailer/ATV were damaged in the crash. According to Chief Rose additional charges are pending against the suspect. With all suspects there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of law.
