Holly Niemi: A Shining Volunteer in Rugby

Volunteering creates a community in which the community as a whole takes on the obligation of compassion, the rewards of achievement and the strength of confidence.

Volunteering in a small town, especially, is the very American ideal that we meet our challenges, not as isolated individuals, but as members of a hometown. A town working together with one mission in hand; a mission to spark, in others and ourselves, a renewed sense of responsibility, a renewed sense of service, and a renewed sense of giving.

Holly Niemi, friendly, helpful and a team player, is a person in our town that embodies these characteristics and more. Niemi gives of herself to many community organizations, including the Growing Place with their fundraisers and at the concession stand for numerous high school events. In addition she has helped at the Pierce County Fair, and continues to help at the Lyric Theater, Eagles Auxiliary, First Lutheran Church Council, and she teaches Sunday School. She has also served on the Rugby Chamber of Commerce, the Rugby Lions, Foster Parents Association and Bowling Association.

When asked what compels her to volunteer she shared, “I like helping people, being involved in the community and being productive.” When asked what gratification she derived from volunteering, she said, “I love the smiles on the kids faces when they come into the theatre and pride knowing that I can help our town in some way.”

One of the tasks that is asked of Niemi is to find volunteers for the Lyric Theater, according to Executive Director of the Rugby Chamber of Commerce Shelley Block, who said, ” I can always count on Holly to find someone to help.” She continued, ” I also know when she does more times than not she is right there beside that person giving of herself.” She is greatly appreciated for all she does.”

Niemi believes the best volunteer is someone who is excited about his or her town and likes to be involved. Luckily for Rugby and the many organizations that lean on her, she represents these qualities and more.
