A Treasured Resident at Haaland Estates

By Staff | Aug 7, 2015

The first thing you notice when you meet Rose Voeller is the twinkle in her eyes, and the little bit of sweet mischievousness that dance behind them.

Rose has been a Pierce County resident all of her life, and has called Rugby her home for the last 45 years. As she talks about her life as a youngster – working on the farm doing chores, going to school on a horse-drawn wagon – a smile never leaves her face. As she regales you with her stories of growing up on a farm in Pierce County, what is most evident is her down-to-earth attitude. When I noticed she was rubbing her hands I asked her did her hands hurt. She shared, “I have to manually take each finger and open them up in the morning because of my arthritis.” She used to milk 30 cows each day no matter the weather condition because that was what needed to be done. Before I could show any sympathy, she looked at me with those sparkling, yet piercing eyes and said, “How it was is how it was. I did what needed to be done.” It was said in such a proud matter of fact that you could see why Rose has the love and respect of the people at Haaland Estates, staff and residents alike.

When Rose was asked what matters most to her in life the answer was simple and direct, Pius. She shared that he was her husband, who passed in 1969 at the age of 48. How she loved him. One of her favorite activities was dancing with him at functions especially weddings.

When asked what her favorite dance was, Rose said, “Well of course the Waltz!” The waltz can be sad and at the same time uplifting. But no matter whether it is sad or uplifting it is what it is. Just how Rose takes life. She makes no excuses, has no regrets she accepted life on its terms and made a lot of people happy and continues to do so.

Just like the waltz, if you take the best from it and love it, it will grab you. It is fitting that the waltz is Rose’s favorite dance as she continues to dance the waltz of life.
