The Norsemen Motorcycle Club put on their 5th Annual “Bikers Fighting Diabetes Run” (BFDR), this past Saturday. BFDR is a local motorcycle run starting from Rugby and ending at Upham, attracting riders from all over the state and neighboring states.

Bikers Fighting Diabetes coordinator Jim Stadum said, ” I feel this year was very successful with the final money tally yet to be determined, but we had over180 bikes with 260 plus riders registered for this year’s event.” Stadum continued, “The ability to give $500.00 to three separate families with children that have been afflicted with this growing disease is very rewarding, and means a lot to everyone in the club.” Jim also shared that once all the accounting is done they will be making an additional donation, this one going to the American Diabetes Association.

The registration was at Rugby’s I.C. Dubbles and the 3rd Street Station with the event ending up in Upham. They left Rugby with a police escort to assure safety. Jim commented, “Safety is always a concern with so many bikes on the road, this year I can thankfully report that there were no accidents or injuries resulting from the ride.”

When Jim was asked why the club did this as an annual event he explained, “Though it is hard work, it is also lot of fun. Couple that with doing something good for the children and seeing how appreciative the parents are it makes it all worthwhile.” Jim also commented, “When people see you riding on the road with your colors on a motorcycle some automatically think there goes a gang member, or an outlaw biker.” Jim continued, ” That couldn’t be farther from the truth. We are a club, we love our brothers, we love to ride, and we love the camaraderie. We are a club that wants to give back to our community.” Jim also said, “Our club is very appreciative of all of our sponsors that make this run possible. When we are out in the community we are very cognizant that we not only represent the Norsemen Motorcycle Club, but we are representing our sponsors and we all take that very seriously.”

Diabetes is something that hits close to home with the Norsemen Club with many of the club members dealing with diabetes according to club member “Ripper”. When you talk about brotherhood in the Norsemen MC, “Ripper” has to come to mind. Ripper’s plans after the run were to make a pilgrimage to Gillett, Wis., to see fellow rider Carl “The Pig” who is 75 years old and in poor health and couldn’t make this year’s run. Ripper describes Carl “The Pig” as a “hardcore Harley rider and a great guy.” It is with members like this that this run will continue to be an annual event. This was confirmed when Coordinator Jim Stadum was asked if there was going to be a 6th Annual “Bikers Fighting Diabetes Run”, Jim smiled and said, “Without a doubt.”
