20 Years & Counting
It is that time of year again with Music in the Park filling the summer air with tunes and melodies that will warm the heart and lift your spirits. There are a few favorite performers returning as well as some new acts that you are sure to enjoy. This year will be the 20th year celebration of the Rugby Lions Club’s annual Music in the Park concert lineup. The concerts are funded through the Lions Club and Rugby Park District. A free will offering is welcomed each week to go toward the music in the park program.
There will be eleven weeks of entertainment scheduled at Ellery Park in the Mark Carlson Memorial Gazebo for your music enjoyment. This eclectic lineup features a mixture of country, rock and roll, gospel, jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, that also include specialty sounds like yodeling and fiddling. The Music in the Park concert series begins on Wednesday, June 10th with Melissa Spelchen out of Minot performing a variety of your favorite tunes and concludes August 19th with the Dakota Keys out of Mandan performing your favorite accordion music.
One of the great new acts coming to Rugby for the Music in the Park concert series is the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band. The band is a group of Air Force professional musicians whose backgrounds include advanced degrees in music performance and whose broad mastery of musical styles range from classic to contemporary, jazz to country, and pop to rock. This group is known throughout the United States for its outstanding performances and recordings. The USAF Heartland of America Band reaches more than one million people annually through live, radio and television appearances, and has been joined in concert by guest artists such as Frank Mantooth, Kevin Mahogany, Frederick Fennell, Chip Davis, John Denver, Crystal Gayle, Joseph Alessi and Wycliffe Gordon. This group will bring great entertainment and attention to Rugby and the Summer Concert Series.
Another act performing, but this one back by popular demand, is the award-winning duo Tigirlily. This talented duo will be performing on July 29th. Tigirlily is the singing sister duo of Kendra and Krista. These talented sisters from Hazen, North Dakota are more than just singers they are songwriters, musicians and outstanding performers. These two talented young ladies have performed all over ND and surrounding states including Tennessee where they took their talents to Nashville. It should also be known that at the 2015 North Dakota Music Awards, Tigirlily was awarded best original country band, best song, best video, best stage show and the U Rock award (the band that gives back). The duo’s hit song “North Dakota” charted on iTunes and is currently their most watched YouTube video with over 325,000 views. Their combined YouTube videos have received over 2.3 million views. Kendra and Krista give back as much as they give by performing for as many fundraising and benefit concerts as they can. They were recently awarded American Patriot plaques for their continued support of this country’s soldiers and veterans. These talented sisters are a must- see whenever possible. So make sure to put the date, the 29th of July, on your calendar. Not only will you be thoroughly entertained by Tigirlilily, but this is also the date for Art in the Park, where local artisans and crafters can show their creations, as well as the Classic Car Show and Hamburgers at Picnic in the Park. The festivities start at 4:00 p.m. with the Art and Classic Car Show. For more information on displaying your art and/or classic cars you can contact Pat at 776-6776. To sum up, the Music in the Park is a series of free concerts beginning at 7 p.m. at Ellery Park at the Mark Carlson Memorial Gazebo which last about an hour, free will donations are accepted and appreciated. As customary, Lions Club members serve free cream to the audience. In addition, there are three Hamburgers at Picnic in the Park picnics put on by the Lions Club. These picnics are planned for June 24th, July 29th, and August 19th. They begin at 5 p.m. Salad, pickles, hamburgers, lemonade & water are served at these picnic affairs. Plus, free ice cream of course! The customary fee for the picnic is $5.00.
For the concerts, picnic benches are provided to sit on, but concertgoers are also encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved indoors to an alternate location. The Music in The Park concert series schedule is as follows: June 10th – Melissa Spelchen, June 17th – USAF Heartland of America Band, June 24th – Marsha Deslauriers plus Hamburgers at Picnic in the Park, July 1st – Ryan Keplin & Band, July 8th – Dick Kimmel, July 15th Cotton Wood, July 22nd – Kristi Goldade, July 29th Tigirlily plus Art in The Park, Classic Car Show & Hamburgers at Picnic in the Park, August 5th – Ron & Opal, August 12th – Church of Cash and the last concert of the series is August 19th – Dakota Keys with a Hamburgers at Picnic in the Park.
