‘A Cup of Pops’ Concert Coming Soon
Village Arts’ Heartland Civic Orchestras and Choir will present a spring pops concert on Sunday, April 26. Deb Jenkins, program director, explained that a theme is determined for each concert based on the music that will be played.
Jenkins said, “This spring we are playing a wide variety of music. Two songs, ‘Coffee’ and ‘Java Jive’ reminded us that like coffee, we have a unique blend of music to offer the community, so we called this concert ‘A Cup of Pops’.”
Every year graduating senior soloists are given the opportunity to solo with the full orchestra. This year’s senior soloists are Nolan Hovland and Darby Deckert. Both have played with the Heartland Civic Orchestra since they were in junior high school. Hovland will perform the Haydn “Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra in E Flat,” while Deckert will play the trombone solo “Atlantic Zephyrs” by Simons. Both have received numerous awards in music festivals over the past six years. Jenkins added, “It is always sort of a bittersweet time when our students graduate. We are very excited to feature them. It is a rite of passage for musicians to play a solo with a symphony orchestra and that is an opportunity we can provide in our rural community. However, we do miss them terribly after they go on to college.”
The Heartland Civic Strings and Symphony Orchestra began giving concerts in 1999. The Heartland Civic Choir was organized two years later. Jenkins said, “As far as I know, Rugby is still considered the smallest community in the nation with a symphony orchestra and comprehensive community music program sponsored by a single organization.”
Conductors are Deb Jenkins, string orchestra, Tilman Hovland, symphony orchestra and Andee Mattson, choir. Lucas Antonson is a junior strings conductor. Micah Scott is a featured guitarist.
“A Cup of Pops” will be performed at the Tilman Hovland Auditorium, Rugby High School on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
