Chamber, Hockey Association meet with Park Board

By Staff | Feb 27, 2015

The Pierce County Park Board met last week with all members present.

Rugby Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Shelley Block and member Levi Heisler discussed with the board their idea for a corn maze to be held in the fall and asked whether it would be possible to hold in on land east of the Pierce County Fairgrounds. The board owns a 38-acre portion of land in that area, 20 of which can be considered tillable farm land. North Central Ag would seed it.

Greg Berginski of the Pierce County Fair board asked Block if they considered asking Gary Laughridge if they could use his land. The fair board petitioned for 5 to 7 acres of land near the fairgrounds for mud runs, a demo derby, and possible uses for horse shows. Berginski expressed concern that cars driving into that area would ruin corn growing in the area. Another area of concern was whether or not corn would grow.

Berginski then met with the board. He said Enduro races were possible and a gate would be needed, and a carnival was booked and they would be setting up shop on June 29.

Raquel Dibble met with the board to discuss the hockey program, numbers, activities and costs incurred. Discussion followed as to who actually owns the Al Wentz Arena. The board owns the land the arena was built on, but the Hockey Association is responsible for arena operations.

The board approved appropriating $6,000 to the Rugby Lions Club for Music in the Park.

The board discussed financials and approved the first payment of $25,000 on a $50,000, two-year note from Bremer Bank to defray costs of walking path repairs. The second payment will be voted on next year.

The board approved an edit on the usage contract for the Community Center on the fairgrounds. If electric heating units were used in the building, an additional $50 would be added to the $100 usage fee.

The board approved paying Phyllis Johnson $50 a month for six months for continuing to do the Park Board scheduling.
