Derby a blast for families

About 200 adults and 80 children took to Sand Lake for the Eagles 20th Almost Annual Fishing Derby on Jan. 10.

Temperatures rose a bit from previous frigid weeks and little wind allowed anglers to enjoy themselves and family.

In adult categories, the top-three placers won $200, $100 and $50, respectively. In the children categories, the top-three placers won $100, $60 and $40, respectively.

The adult perch winner was Balzer Welk with a fish of 8.5 ounces. Junior Davis and Chuck Christenson followed with 7.5 and 7.25 ounces, respectively.

The adult northern winner was Steve Hoffart with a fish at 4 and 7/8ths pounds. Diane Bachmeier and Bernie Selensky followed with 4 and 3/16ths and 3.25 pounds, respectively.

The children’s perch winner was Kevin Vetsch with the overall heaviest perch of 9.5 ounces. Hudson Hooker and Cole Fredricks followed with 7.25 and 6.75 ounces, respectively.

The children’s northern winner was Gage Balfour at 3 pounds. Gryphon Wangler and Fredricks followed at 2 and 5/8ths and 2 and 7/16ths, respectively.

Raffle prizes were also awarded in the evening with Greg Stahl winning an ice auger and fish house, and Kevin Michalenko winning a fish camera.

Marvin Michalenko won the traveling trophy.
