Change nigh for Rugby depot

By Staff | Nov 21, 2014

Changes in staffing hours will be coming soon to the Rugby Amtrak depot.

According to Rugby depot agent Duane Veach, the depot will be staffed Sunday through Friday mornings from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., or until the westbound Empire Builder arrives, and evenings from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., or until the eastbound Empire Builder arrives.

Currently the depot is staffed from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Veach said no official start date for the change in staffing hours has been set yet, although Rugby could see it take place as early as mid-December, but no later than January 2015.

Veach also said the depot will eventually bring back baggage checks, but on a limited basis. Baggage checks haven’t been done at the depot for 12 years.

Veach said that while the changes are “taking a bit of service away”, especially for those who want to buy tickets at the depot during the day, Amtrak is adding more, as the depot will be staffed for 10 trains a week rather than five.

Veach said the idea for changes at the depot came up midsummer, after the director for the Empire Builder and California Zephyr routes asked for ways to improve passenger service along Amtrak routes.
