Racing for Warriors

On Saturdays most kids relax, hang out with their friends or watch TV. Last Saturday, Rugby resident Alaric Skjelver ran a 10K (10 kilometers or 6.2 miles).
During the half-marathon last weekend in Grand Forks, Alaric, 10, finished eighth out of 95 runners in the 16-and-under division of the 10K.
“If I had to describe it in one word, it would be fun,” Alaric said. “It was pretty difficult. It kept me going when I could see mile markers ahead and hear people cheering.”
Skjelver ran the race despite a broken arm, which occurred during a football game on the playground at Ely Elementary school.
“I couldn’t really notice any difference, except for a bit more weight,” Skjelver said.
Before running the 10K, he helped raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project – a Jacksonville, Fla. based non-profit organization dedicated to helping battle-wounded veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan get through everyday life. Alaric raised $550 for the organization.
Alaric said he enjoys long-distance running. When given the opportunity he also enjoys running with his father, Jeff, who served in the Marine Corps.
