Frank and Kathryn Volk may be getting older, but it hasn’t stopped them from giving their time.

Both Frank and Kathryn were named Volunteer of the Month for the month of September by the Rugby Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I was really surprised [Wednesday] morning,” Frank said of the honor. Kathryn said the same.

The couple volunteers with several organizations. Frank helps with Bingo and plays cards with Haaland Estates and HAMC Care Center residents. Around Christmas he has played Santa Claus for them. Kathryn delivers newspapers to residents.

In the past, Frank and Kathryn also delivered “Meals on Wheels” and volunteered for special events at the Rugby Senior Center.

“They’re still very good. They try to help whenever they can,” said Myrna Muffenbier of the Senior Center.

Frank and Kathryn have also taken tickets for events at the Pierce County Fair. At Prairie Village Museum functions Kathryn churned butter in the creamery, while Frank tended bar in the saloon.
