Juvenile injured in ATV crash
On July 19, about 10 a.m., Rugby Police Department and Rugby Ambulance responded to an accident involving an ATV in Rugby.
The ATV was being operated by an 8-year-old male on private property. The ATV struck a neighboring garage and then struck a parked vehicle. The operator, who was thrown off, was not wearing a helmet. The operator was transported to Heart of America Medical Center with apparent minor injuries. The accident was caused by operator inexperience and the ATV being too large for the operator to safely control.
The Rugby Police Department reminds ATV operators to follow the age guidelines from the manufacturer, with most ATVs being for adult riders only. Also an individual under the age of 18 years may not operate, ride or otherwise be propelled on an ATV unless the person wears a safety helmet meeting United States Department of Transportation standards. This includes side-by-side ATVs, which are designed for on- and off-road use.
