Grandma quilting for research
The Step Out Walk for Diabetes will take place Oct. 25 in Grand Forks at the Alerus Center. This year, Jane Ekren, of Rugby, made a quilt of Step Out Walk T-shirts and is selling raffle tickets to be drawn at the event.
“My granddaughter, Madi Meyer, is who really inspired me to make this quilt,” Ekren said. “She has had type 1 diabetes since she was 5, and is now 14. She was the person who got us involved in the Step Out Walk. We were out at rummage sales when I saw all these shirts and thought I could make a quilt out of them.”
This marks the fourth year of their involvement for the Ekrens. Their team is called Madi’s Team. The Meyers live in Grand Forks.
“Madi was the one who found out about the fundraiser through our paper, and she really wanted to be a part of it,” said Shelly Meyer, Madi’s mother. “With her, and so many other people living with this illness, doing this fundraiser could help possibly find a cure.”
Madi’s Team was recently at the Pierce County Fair, selling about 20 tickets on July 4. The team will also be at Music in the Park on June 30. The quilt will be on display in Merchants Bank in the future, where supporters can also purchase the raffle tickets for $5 per ticket.
