Pierce County competes at 4-H meat judging contest

The 4-H meat judging team from Pierce County placed third in the senior division of the state 4-H meat judging contest held June 6 at North Dakota State University. The N.D. 4-H meats judging contest is held in conjunction with the N.D. FFA meats evaluation and technology career development event during the FFA State Convention and is a collaborative effort between North Dakota 4-H and North Dakota FFA.

The meat judging contest included identification of retail cuts, six classes of four meat exhibits and defending the ranked order with oral reasons or questions about the classes.

Team members are Alex Hoffert, Devin Volk and Josh Pfeifer. Rick Vannett is the team’s coach.

Volk was the team’s high individual, placing third overall in the contest. Pfeifer placed sixth and Hoffert Placed 21st.

The North Dakota Beef Commission, NDSU Animal Sciences Department and North Dakota 4-H Foundation are the sponsors for this contest. The contest was directed by Robert Maddock, NDSU Extension Service meats specialist, and Gary Martens, 4-H volunteer.
