The Rugby Job Development Authority and the Economic Development Association of North Dakota (EDND) played host to several economic developers from around the state at a two-day conference held in Rugby.

The 2014 EDND Summer Conference kicked off Tuesday evening at Dakota Farms with a welcome from Rugby mayor Dave Cichos. Ryan Taylor, of Towner, provided entertainment.

The conference had two keynote speakers. On Wednesday, Pollina Corporate Real Estate President/Geoeconomist Ron Pollina spoke on creating a competitive business environment. On Thursday, North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Drew Wrigley spoke on how economic development is valuable in a changing North Dakota.

On Wednesday and Thursday, attendees were treated to several economics-related panels on various subjects, including tax incentives, infrastructure, developing a workforce, child care needs and housing. District 7 Rep. Jon Nelson (R-Rugby) was on a legislative panel moderated by EDND Executive Director Dana Bohn. Other state government officials on panels during the conference were Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger, Sens. Dave Oehlke (R-Devils Lake) and Dwight Cook (R-Mandan), and Rep. Tracy Boe (D-Mylo).

On Wednesday attendees also toured the Iberdrola Renewables wind farm and Rugby Manufacturing (TBEI). They were also treated to movie theater popcorn at the Lyric Theatre, where Friends of the Lyric president Sue Steinke explained to attendees the community and the JDA’s involvement in restoring the theater to its former glory with modern upgrades.
