Deslauriers performs at Music in the Park

Despite gray clouds and an impending storm, Sherwood singer Marsha Deslauriers was able to pull off the third performance in this year’s Music in the Park with only a few drops falling.

Deslauriers is no stranger to performing in inclement weather.

“I sang one time at the Boys Ranch and it was snowing on my mic,” Deslauriers recalled.

Deslauriers sang an extensive repertoire of music from various decades, as well as her take on gospel hymns. Some of her songs extended as far back as big band numbers from the ’30s and ’40s.

“Even with a younger crowd, it goes over well,” Deslauriers said.

While most of the songs she sang were set to a backing track made by her producer, she also played guitar and trumpet on some songs as well.

Deslauriers played in front of a crowd not just from Rugby, but also from other towns.

“I loved it,” said Steve Dockter, of Rugby, who was one of many in attendance. “It was very inspirational.”

Daryl Thompson, an attendee from Bismarck, said, “The singer [Deslauriers] was excellent and very appreciative of her audience.”

Thompson also had some nice words regarding Music in the Park.

“It is an excellent example of a community sharing something together,” he said.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, Rugby has always been a 10,” Deslauriers said of the crowd at Music in the Park. “I’ve had several returners and some new faces in the crowd.”

Brass band, picnic on deck

The International Brass Quintet, a brass quintet in residence at International Music Camp, will perform Wednesday, June 25.

Comprised of Tim Farrell, Ronnie Ingle, Thomas Zugger, Arlene Shiplett and Devin Otto, the group performs an extensive repertoire from baroque to jazz.

Also that night is the first of three Lions Club picnics this season. Club members will serve hamburgers.

All Music in the Park performances take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Ellery Park. In the event of inclement weather, tune in to KZZJ for more information.
