Northeast District Court update

By Staff | Feb 28, 2014

Northeast District Court Judge John C. McClintock Jr. heard just one felony case this week. Ross Olson, 33, of Rugby, pleaded guilty to theft of property, a Class B felony, on Tuesday at the Pierce County Courthouse in Rugby.

Olson was charged with theft of property for 35 unauthorized transfers of funds from an elderly woman’s bank account in Rugby. The stolen money was used to pay credit transactions incurred by the defendant, according to a court report.

Olson was placed on supervised probation for three years and ordered to pay restitution of $13,588.64 to the victim and $800 in court monetary sanctions. He will have to complete 50 hours of community service in the next four months.

Olson was sentenced to one year incarceration with the North Dakota Department of Corrections with all but three days suspended.

A plea to a felony offense with a sentence of one year or less may result in a misdemeanor conviction, if the defendant successfully completes his probation. Revocation of probation can result in a maximum sentence of incarceration.
