Reward for a true fan
Kayla Koehmstedt prefers seeing Adrian Peterson on the field when the Minnesota Vikings play, but his absence from one recent game worked out all right.
The Vikings beat the Philadelphia Eagles 48-30 on Dec. 15 at Mall of America Field, where Koehmstedt was present with front row seats behind the bench along with friend Dylan Volk. The tickets were a 19th-birthday present for Koehmstedt, an avid fan.
Knowing Peterson was out of the lineup, Koehmstedt wore her No. 84 Cordarrelle Patterson jersey. The rookie wide receiver smiled at Koehmstedt when she called his name and pointed at her jersey.
“Five plays after (the initial connection), he got the touchdown,” Koehmstedt said. “He ran behind the bench and a bunch of people were like, ‘What’s he’s doing?’ So he started extending his arms with the ball. I had a crazy reaction on TV that everybody saw.
“After the game, before he went to shake hands with the other team, he went to sign the ball and some game-day magazines.”
Not a bad way to celebrate a birthday for the 2013 Rugby High School graduate and North Dakota State University sophomore.
“We just kind of said, ‘Thanks,’ ” Koehmstedt said. “I think I was so in awe of everything. I said, ‘Thanks,’ and he said, ‘No problem.’ It wasn’t a lot because he had to get back on the field.”
It was the sixth Vikings game she’s attended, but the most memorable yet. Koehmstedt is studying marketing and already seems to have a good grasp on getting the attention of others.
