Work under way on Family Dollar Store

By Staff | Jul 19, 2013

Rugby’s Family Dollar Store is under construction and should be completed by early September, according to the building’s developer.

The concrete foundation for the building, which will set on the east side of the Hub Plaza, has been completed and is awaiting the building contractor.

“They’re trying to get the guys out there to put up the building,” said Trey Perman with Delta T Development. “The foundation is complete.”

At 8,320 square feet, the building will be identical to nearly every other Family Dollar Store, of which there are more than a dozen in North Dakota, including in Rolla and Devils Lake.

“All of the stores are identical,” Perman said. “(The Rugby store) will be the same as the other stores. It’ll be a very similar product mix if not identical.”

Perman is anticipating opening the store around Sept. 1, as general contractor BJ Baas out of Cambridge, Minn., works toward completing the remaining parts of the job.

“They need to get in there and put the walls up,” Perman said. “Get in the electricians, the plumbers, HVAC, get the parking lot and signs done.”

Family Dollar Stores were started in 1959, when Leon Levine opened the first store in Charlotte, N.C.

In total, the chain has more than 7,600 stores nationwide with a philosophy of offering a “self-serve, cash-and-carry neighborhood discount store in low to middle income neighborhoods,” according to its website.
