Village Arts holding informational meeting
All members of the community are invited to an informational meeting about Village Arts upcoming events and opportunities for participation onWednesday, April 17th, 7:00 PM in the high school band room. Village Arts sponsors an annual children’ theatre program during the summer, the Heartland community music program with orchestra and choir, and is now working to publish a book featuring the work of local writers. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about all programs and sign up those interested in participating in this year’s programs.
Village Arts also produces a summer community musical each year. This year the organization, as one of the first in the world, was offered a license to produce the world famous musical “Les Miserables”. It is estimated that 60 million people have attended 47,000 stage performances of “Les Miserables” since its premiere in Paris in 1980. It is one of the most popular musicals in the world, but until recently was only available to professional theatre companies.
Artistic Director Glory Monson said,” We have been so pleased to get rights to the show. Not only were we the first to get rights, but will be among the first in the world to produce the show since production will not be allowed anywhere until the end of June. It is truly amazing that our small theatre was given this chance to make a mark in theatre history!”
Managing Director Deb Jenkins added,” We have been calling New York for the past five years, asking if there was a chance we could get the show. Our agent told us not to expect a glimmer of a chance until 2016, so we were shocked when we got rights to produce this year. “
Questions will be answered about all programs at the informational meeting, but those in attendance may also audition for “Les Miserables”, which will be performed at the Tilman Hovland Auditorium, Rugby High School Monday through Thursday, June 24, 25, 26 and 27.
Official “Les Miserables” auditions will be held on Wednesday, April 24th, Thursday, April 25th and Friday, April 26th at 7:00 PM in the Rugby High School band and choir rooms. There will be a choral sing-through on Monday, April 29th, and cast meeting on Tuesday, April 30th. Those who would like to volunteer as set workers, costume makers and stage hands should also attend the informational meeting on April 17th for sign-ups.
