By Staff | Apr 22, 2013

Sanford Health Plan is purchasing the Heart of America Health Plan (HOAHP), according to a letter sent by HOAHP to its policyholders.

Heart of America Health Plan was founded in 1982, and became the longest standing independent Health Maintenance Organization in North Dakota, according to its website.

HOAHP’s site says it offers plans to employer groups, families and individuals in the Rugby, Minot and Bottineau areas, and to Medicare-eligible people in the Rugby and Bottineau areas.

Sanford Health Plan, founded in 1998, has more than 66,000 members in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota, according to its website.

According to the letter, HOAHP will continue daily operations, with no changes to senior management and current staff continuing in its roles.

The letter said that after the transaction is complete, Sanford Health Plan “may choose to combine the operations of certain department to cause operational efficiencies, introduce new business procedures, information systems, or expand product lines and/or services currently offered” by HOAHP.

In accordance with the N.D. Insurance Commissioner’s approval process, policy holders will be able to attend a hearing regarding the transaction scheduled for Thursday, April 25 at 1 p.m. at the Grand International Hotel in Minot.

Sanford Health Plan is located in Sioux Falls, S.D., but the letter said HOAHP’s offices will continue operations and recordkeeping at its Rugby location.

Calls to the HOAHP for comment were not returned.
