Rugby Eagles fishing derby approaching
The Rugby Eagles 18th Almost Annual Fishing Derby is set for Jan. 12 at Sand Lake, just 10 miles east of Rugby.
The derby is scheduled to run from noon to 2 p.m. but participants are asked to come earlier to get registered and get their ice houses up.
“We’re usually out there by 10 a.m. to start registering people,” said organizer Paul Niemi.
Called the “Almost Annual” because a few have been missed over the years, Niemi said.
Tickets for the adults for the derby are $20 and include dinner and dance afterward at the Eagles Club, as well as entry for door prizes and a raffle.
Entry fee for the kids division is just $5 but kids must pay for their meal at the Eagles separately.
The kids division was added to the derby about 10 years ago, according to Niemi.
“We usually have a couple hundred people and nearly a hundred in the kids division,” he said. “One year we had almost 450 people. It depends on the weather sometimes, or other activities going on in town. We’ve been doing it a long time because people keep asking us to do it.”
