Little Flower student wins poster contest
Little Flower 6th grader Halie Schmaltz has won the 2012 International Peace Poster Contest, sponsored by the Rugby Lions Club.
Every year, the Rugby Lions Club sponsors students in the International Peace Poster contest. The club encourages young people, ages 11-13, to think about peace, creatively express what it means to them and share their own unique visions with the world. The contest is a wonderful opportunity for clubs to work with youth in their community to stress the importance of peace, tolerance and international understanding.

Schaan’s receive award
Ken and Marlene Schaan, and Riley and Erin Schaan, whose farmstead is located 1 miles northwest of Balta, ND, have been selected as the 2012 Conservation Achievement Award winners by the Pierce County Soil Conservation District.
The Schaans participate in the EQIP and CSP, following a conservation tillage system, planting cover crops, installing field and farmstead windbreaks, grassed waterways and doing saline plantings. They are proud of their no-till system sometimes having to give up some yield, but find the benefit in the long run is soil conservation.
The Schaan farm has been in the family since 1949. Ken and Marlene took over the farm in 1978 and raised their family of 4 sons there. They now have 5 grandchildren also. Riley and his wife Erin have been farming with his dad for several years. They have 3 children, Caleb, Meagen and Isaiah.
The Schaans will be invited, as guests of the Pierce County SCD, to attend the 74th Annual ND Association of Soil Conservation Districts convention to be held in Bismarck in November. At that time they will be honored, along with the other ND Conservation District winners, at an awards banquet, and will receive a 16″ X 20″ colored aerial photo of their farmstead. The Pierce County SCD will also hold a banquet honoring the Schaans later in the year.
