Area residents honor veterans

By Staff | Nov 27, 2012

Residents of Rugby and surrounding areas gathered on the morning of Nov. 12 to commemorate those who have served our country in a Veterans Day ceremony at Memorial Hall in Rugby.

The program was kicked off by Commander Jim Heilman’s welcome to the crowd.

The American Legion Color Guard advanced the colors to the front of the room followed by a performance of the national anthem and a recital of the pledge of allegiance.

Rev. Jeff Miller performed the invocation before SFC Kirk Seaver gave a tribute to veterans.

It included a number of good musical selections, including songs representing each branch of the armed service from the Rugby High School band under the direction of Kari Hill.

A new addition to the program was some songs from the Ely Elementary Choir, directed by Andee Mattson.

Sarah Selensky also added a vocal selection that the crowd enjoyed immensely.

The crowd said a silent prayer in tribute to deceased prisoners of war and soliders missing in action.

Miller gave the Benediction and Tilman Hovland performed “Taps” before the colors were retired.
