Organizations sponsor property tax forum
Two farm organizations are co-sponsoring an “Issues Open Forum on Measure #2” on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rugby Eagles. The public is encouraged to attend this important informational forum. Find out what this measure can mean to North Dakota residents.
Measure #2 (M2) is the measure that asks voters to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on abolishing property taxes. In fact, the measure , if it passes, will amend the constitution of North Dakota, abolishing the authority of any government entity to raise taxes that are based on the valuation of property.
At first glance this measure seems like a great idea. No more property taxes to pay. Who wouldn’t want more money in their pockets?
However, the measure does not define how the services residents rely on such as police protection, fire protection, emergency services, good roads, etc. will be funded without property taxes which fund those services now.
Property tax is currently a local tax. If M2 passes, the opportunity to vote on local issues such as building or renovating schools, parks, major water and road projects, and more will go to the state legislature which would then have to appropriate funds.
This forum will provide information to the public and answer questions people might have on Measure 2.
