Veterans Day activities begin at 11

By Staff | Nov 4, 2011

The 93rd anniversary of the World War I armistice will be remembered with a Veterans Day program on Friday, November 11. The program will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Hall and is sponsored by the American Legion Clarence Larson Post 23.

Adding a sad note to this already somber remembrance is that Commander Daryl Kuhnhenn who has organized the event for the past several years passed away in September. But, as Daryl would say, “it’s not about me, it’s about those who gave all”.

The progam begins with a welcome by Don Abrahamson who will be this year’s emcee. The American Legion Color Guard will advance the colors.

The National Anthem will be played by the Rugby High School band and the Pledge of Allegiance recited by all in attendance.

Rev. Nathan Steen will give the invocation and benediction.

The Veterans Address will be presented by Wally Fretland. This will be followed by a special tribute to veterans. The Rugby High School band will play a musical selection.

A moment of silence will be held as a tribute to deceased veterans, P.O.W.’s and M.I. A.’s. Tilman Hovland, will play TAPS followed by the retiring of the colors.

A noon lunch is open to the public after the program. The American Legion club will be open in the afternoon for all veterans. The World War II Last Man’s Club will meet after lunch in the Legion room.

The program will be broadcast live on KZZJ Radio.

Out of respect for all veterans, government offices are closed on Nov. 11.
