Fill the Boot for MDA
The Rugby Fire Department is starting a project in this area called Fill the Boot to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). MDA treats more than 30 neuro-muscular diseases.
Rugby Volunteer Firefighters will stand at two intersections where there is a stop sign and hold out a boot for donations. The money will go to help the kids who have one of the neuromuscular diseases like muscular dystrophy. People who want to participate can drive by and drop cash into the boot.
Although new to Rugby in recent years at least, the Fill the Boot campaign is a national event that was started in 1954 when one firefighter in Boston went door-to-door to ask for funds. It is a tradition for firefighters to participate in this fundraiser.
Rugby’s campaign is sponsored by the Rugby Fire Department and led by Danny Raymond, paramedic, HAMC, who moved to Rugby in March. Raymond has participated in this fundraiser before in another town.
Fill the Boot is actually a year around project. The Rugby firefighters will be asking for donations at least three times, once before Labor Day which is the traditional “Jerry’s Kids Day”.
