Souris Basin Transportation keeps busy

By Staff | Nov 26, 2010

Souris Basin Transportation, home office, Minot, operates every day in Rugby. Anyone who needs a ride to an appointment or downtown to shop or whatever the need, Souris Basin Transportation is available. The cost is $1 each way and $1 for any extra stop.

Den Kuhnemund has been driving for 24 years. He, along with Brian Lenzmeier, retired teacher, RHS, and Trudy Lenzmeier, retired teacher/principal, Ely Elementary School, are the drivers of this local transportation system.

Anyone can ride. The van is available Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. in Rugby.

Every Thursday, a bus takes people to Minot to shop, attend medical appointments or visit family and friends. The bus starts picking up people from their homes at 8:00 a.m. and gets to Minot about 9:30 10:00 a.m.

“We take them anywhere they want to go in Minot, ” said Kuehnemund. “We start with the medical appointments first, then a drop off at Dakota Mall and then delivery to family or wherever.”

The cost for the Minot roundtrip is $8 and the bus holds 18 people. Call dispatch at 2080153 to schedule a ride for Thursdays.

For rides in Rugby, the drivers are “on call” and appreciate it if people call a couple days ahead for established appointments like hair or medical appointments. They will try to accommodate as many people as they can on a first come, first served basis. In town, they use a Dodge van that is wheelchair accessible, or can use the bus if needed.

In addition to their regular service, special group trips can be planned. People who have a group that wants to go to some place like the Peace Garden or other attraction need to call Minot at 1-800-927-8318 to make arrangements. The cost on these special trips vary according to the trip. Kuehnemund can drive the special trips and the Lenzmeiers stay in Rugby to take care of the local trips.

Kuehnemund wants to stress that the bus/van rides are not just for seniors. Anyone can use this transportation system. Rides are $1 each stop in Rugby.
