Residents can begin filing to run for county office
The June Primary election is six months away, but residents interested in filing to run for county commission or other county offices up for election this year can start collecting petitions as early as January 9.
Candidates are required to fill out election forms prior to collecting the necessary number of signatures, and those forms can be obtained by contacting Karin Fursather, county auditor, or by downloading them on the Secretary of State’s website.
There are three commission districts up for election – District 1 (northeast), 3 (city of Rugby) and 5 (south and west). Each term covers four years. The offices of sheriff, states attorney, clerk of court and county recorder are also on the primary and general election ballot.
The first day the petitions can be returned to the county auditor for review is Jan. 11. The last day to return them is by 4 p.m. on April 9. The number of signatures necessary to collect is in relation to a percentage of people who voted in the 2008 election. That number can be obtained by contacting Fursather at 776-5225, extension 1.
