Veach steps down from DES post
Duane Veach has resigned as county emergency manager/911 coordinator.
Veach has served in the positions since March of 2002, but said in recent years more responsibilities have been added to the positions which required more attention.
Veach enjoyed both jobs, and the county commission agreed to expand his hours, he didn’t have enough time during the work week to devote to them, given his full-time position as Amtrak depot agent.
As emergency manager, he worked closely with FEMA and state disaster officials in processing public assistance damage from floods and severe weather. He also managed the county’s annual Department of Homeland Security apportionment, and worked with the Local Emergency Planning Committee on how those fund would be spent.
As 911 coordinator, he supervised the implementation of wireless 911 into the current system, enabling dispatchers to locate calls made from cell phones.
The county commission has begun a search to fill the part-time emergency management post, while the 911 coordinator duties will be assumed by the county’s 911 emergency dispatch head.
